Our Technology

BiosparQ technology enables real-time bacterial profiling directly from a sample. Within a few minutes of taking the sample, its full bacterial composition can be determined. By analyzing cells one by one on the basis of “single-cell” MALDI TOF mass spectrometry, no time-consuming cultivation or isolation processes are required. Additionally, there’s no need for expensive laboratory infrastructure or costly cartridges or other consumables.

Today, identification of bacteria is often based on cultivation (colony growing) of the infectious agent in a laboratory. This multiplication process, which can take several days, is required to get a sufficiently large quantity of cells that can be analyzed with various standard tests. Consequently, the time from taking the sample to identification of the infectious agent takes at least several days!

Tests based on amplifying genetic material (PCR) are considerably faster, but still take a few hours and require complicated processing equipment.

Besides offering unprecedented speed BiosparQ technology is unique in being able to determine the full bacterial profile of a sample in one test and show all agents present in the sample. Other technologies can only confirm the presence of a specific agent and consequently several consecutive tests are necessary for identification.

SINGLE CELL MALDI TOF MASS SPECTROMETRY

BiosparQ technology replaces the traditional target-plate based transport of the sample to the mass spectrometry sensor by an aerosol-based transport. Instead of depositing samples onto a target plate, a suspension containing the sample as well as the matrix is printed into an air stream.

Subsequently the aerosol flow is dried and the resulting particles are transported to the ion source, where the individual particles are ionized by a UV laser.

Using this approach, a mass spectrum is generated for every single particle. Based on a proprietary algorithm these individual spectra are sorted and identified on the basis of a classifier database.
